Exceptional Children Program (EC)
AIG Program
The structure of the Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program at Mountain Island Charter School integrates authentic, higher-level learning within each AIG students’ school day.
Service Delivery Model AIG students are not pulled from core academic instruction in order to receive gifted services. AIG instruction is provided in addition to their daily core curriculum schedule during an additional enrichment period. All students within a grade level will be transitioning to a targeted intervention or enrichment during this time, so AIG students will no longer encounter social pressures or anxiety related to missing something in their regular class that is associated with an AIG pullout model.
Instructional Materials We provide research-based instruction using The College of William and Mary Literacy Curriculum for grades K-5. Students in grades 3-8 participate in Math Olympiad and accelerated math instruction for grades K-5 utilizes The Problem-Solver, Math Stars, and Math Superstars curriculum. Fridays may be a dedicated day for project-based learning opportunities to include Genius Hour research projects, authentic Science projects/labs, and additional problem-solving activities.
Support throughout the School Day The AIG teacher provides materials and models strategies for all of our teachers, resulting in increased academic rigor throughout the school day. This collaboration also results in a more robust curriculum and a teaching staff better equipped to incorporate gifted instructional strategies into daily lessons.
Middle School Students: AIG students matriculating from 5th grade into middle school may be placed into our Honors program, which will provide an accelerated curriculum designed to prepare students for entry into early high school mathematics, world languages while still in middle school, and Advanced Placement (AP) coursework at the high school level.
High School Students: AIG students matriculating from 8th grade into high school may be placed into the Honors Program and/or Advanced Placement (AP) courses. AIG students also have the option to enroll in college level courses as early as 9th grade and continuing through their senior year as a part of the Career & College Promise program.
Social & Emotional Support: Social & Emotional support will be provided through our Guidance Department as needed, at all grade levels.
EC Program
Mountain Island Charter School believes that each student with a disability deserves a high quality and individually designed education. The Exceptional Children’s program must ensure that students with disabilities develop mentally, physically, emotionally, and vocationally to the fullest extent possible through appropriate, individualized education in the least restrictive environment.
The EC teachers employ specially-designed instruction by adapting, as appropriate to the needs of an eligible child, the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction. EC teachers and general education teachers will work together to plan and implement evidence-based instruction, closely monitor individual progress, and make timely instructional decisions.
Special education teachers will provide the differentiation through presenting subject matter in different ways, using different texts or materials, using technology, and setting expectations. The overall goal of the EC department is to establish a successful collaboration between special educators, general educators, related professionals, and families in order to successfully teach and support students with disabilities.
Parent Resources
Mountain Island Charter School is responsible for locating, identifying, and evaluating students with disabilities who are enrolled in a school within the district.
