Theatre at MICS

Mountain Island Charter School supports student success through several different avenues of theatre arts and musical theatre experiences. We perform two musicals per year. The first is a Junior Musical which combines students from the Elementary, Middle and High School to perform a musical at the Pease Center Theatre at CPCC, which is directed by Jessie Clarkson. During the spring semester, Mr. Ward directs a production that utilizes our talented high school and select middle school students. We participate in the Bluemy’s annually for this production. The High School students participate in the North Carolina Theatre Confrence which is a high school play festival where we are assessed by peer schools and remain to enjoy the performances of other schools.

Elementary Theatre

4th-5th grades have the opportunity to audition for our winter junior musicals in the fall. All activities are held after school.

Middle School Theatre

Middle School Theatre Arts  is offered for grades 6-8. Sixth grade students take one semester of Theatre Arts along with Art in the alternate semester to give the students an opportunity to try different forms of expression. Middle school students are expected to try their best in a curriculum designed around performing theatre. Students will learn different styles of plays from various eras of history.  Students will work with both scripted plays as well as improvisation based plays. Students will learn the basics of design and production.

High School Theatre

Theatre Arts and Technical Theatre are offered to high school students at MICS.  Students will learn how to effectively plan and produce dramatic works. Technical Theatre students will work with Mr. Ward to learn how to safely use tools and build scenery. Technical Theatre student will learn how to program and run a lighting console and sound board. Theatre students will learn how to build performance from script to stage. They will learn different acting techniques and practices while applying them to play work/study in class.

Haunted Hallways

As part of the Fall Festival, students at MICS transform part of the C building into a haunted house experience. Students develop the theme, come up with the ideas, and produce the entire event. Those who wish to enjoy the haunted hallway are warned that this is a scary experience and not suitable for all people.
