Elementary School (K-5)

Mountain Island Charter School's K-5 program provides a student-centered, research-based curriculum that is aligned with the North Carolina Course of Study. Students are taught Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. A daily specials rotation includes Art, Music, Physical Education, Media, Technology, Science Lab, and Band (Grade 5). Instructional strategies are rigorous, provide hands on learning, and teach students to problem solve and communicate their learning. Daily interventions are provided for students with a variety of needs through the Exceptional Children Program, AIG, and SOAR intervention program.

Numerous opportunities are available for students to develop leadership skills, service, and character. The Choose Love Curriculum provides a foundation for our character education program. Our Principal’s Book of the Month supports both our Character Education Program and our literacy program. Accelerated Reader is used as a motivational tool to encourage students to become friends with books.

Special events throughout the year include the Raptor Run, Grandfriends Day, Book Character Parade, and Salute to Veterans. The After-School Enrichment Program offers numerous fee-based activities including Running Raptors, Mad Science, Golf Squad, Bricks for Kids, and Lego Robotics. Students have opportunities for service and leadership through Student Council and Safety Patrol and numerous school-wide and grade level specific projects. There is something for everyone at MICS!

Literacy At Home: Digital Children's Reading Initiative

In order to provide continuing support for North Carolina’s youngest readers, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Early Learning has developed and released “Literacy at Home.” This digital resource provides literacy activities at each grade level, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Families and communities may access this resource for activities that specifically target the literacy skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and oral language. When children grow in each of these foundational areas they are well on their way to becoming proficient readers. Click HERE for one page parent flyer.

Dress Code

The school implements a restrictive coordinate dress code to promote a focused and safe learning environment. A K-12 progressive approach allows for increased choice when developmentally appropriate. Success depends upon a cooperative partnership between the home and school.
